Les Ming (1368-1644) ont construit cette muraille pour se protéger d’un ennemi redoutable. En effet à l’époque des Ming, de vastes steps au nord de la muraille abritaient des hordes de cavaliers nomades. Ce sont les mongols, féroces guerrier qui ont pillés la chine pendant des siècles. Pour les repousser , les Ming ont alors bati la Grande Muraille. Mais celle-ci possède des secrets remontant à avant l’Empire Ming. D’autres sections de murailles sont découvretes plus loin que l’endroit de base ou se “termine” la muraille (désert de Gobi). Sur place, des matériaux datant de la dynastie Han sont retrouvés, soit 1 500 an avant les Ming. Ces murailles étaient dans tous les cas des moyens de défense contre les invasions, mais avait également la fonction de protéger l’accès à la Chine des routes de la soie.
